Commissioned pieces are available upon request. Above is an example of a piece, commissioned by a friend, whose home water is Penns Creek. Below are some of the reference photos he forwarded to me to aide in creating an original, customized, charcoal rendering to his specifications. I am able to capture the essence of most fishing experiences based on four variables...
1. The trophy! Whether it's the fish of a lifetime or a memorable 8" first catch, a photo often doesn't preserve the splendor and beauty of what you've landed like a rendering seen above!
2. The waterway/location where trophy was landed. Every true fisherman knows that the fish he or she catches is just one aspect of the overall experience. Thoreau said it best in his famous quote, “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” Being in God's grand creation and experiencing the sights, smells, and sounds of where you are fishing is often times as enthralling as what you are catching! Rendering the trophy on a map of the location in which it was landed allows me to "catch" more of the overall experience rather than depicting just the fish itself.
3. The fly pattern you used to land the fish. In fishing, and fly fishing in particular, what you caught the fish on is often times as interesting as the catch itself. Whether it's your go-to pattern or a special fly you personally designed or tied, why you chose to use a specific fly helps convey the narrative!
4. The tackle you used to land the fish; ex: rod, reel, net, ect. Most fly fisherman are as compassionate about the gear they carry as the fish they catch! That 3 wt bamboo rod that was was passed down from generation to generation, the Abel reel you used to land your very first fish, a lucky net that you found along the banks on the Bighorn; the personal sentiment of the gear is variable, but there is always a story to be told about a fisherman's gear!
"Sketch and Release" as I've heard it referred to, is often times a more cost efficient and enjoyable method of "catching" the memory of a lifetime. Mounts and replicas are nice, but they often lack the ability to convey the detailed narratives that go along with the catch. And guys, if your wife is anything like mine, she will be WAY more likely to allow you to hang a drawing of your 25lb steelhead in your living room than an actual mount or replica. These charcoal on map renderings make a GREAT conversation piece for any man cave, cabin or living room!
